Zeeschildpadden, een zeereptiel, zijn een van de oudste wezens op aarde en bestaan al sinds de tijd dat dinosauri\u00ebrs rondzwierven \u2013 ruim 110 miljoen jaar geleden. Tegenwoordig leven er over de hele wereld zeven verschillende soorten zeeschildpadden, waarbij elke soort wordt geclassificeerd als bedreigd of bedreigd. Hiervan noemen vijf soorten zeeschildpadden de wateren van Florida hun thuis en drie soorten; de onechte karetschildpad, de groene zeeschildpad en de lederschildpad nestelen jaarlijks op de stranden van Broward County. Nesten van karetschildpadden worden het meest aangetroffen in het gebied en vertegenwoordigen historisch gezien meer dan 90% van alle zeeschildpaddennesten in Broward County.
