Die Briten anglisierten Cayo Hueso sp\u00e4ter zu Key West.<\/p>\n<p>Key West wurde 1822 gegr\u00fcndet und wuchs in den 1850er Jahren auf etwa 2.700 Menschen an. Ungef\u00e4hr einmal in der Woche lief ein Schiff auf Grund und der Ruf \u201eWrack an Land\u201c war in der ganzen Stadt zu h\u00f6ren. Abwracker rannten zum Riff, um das Schiff und seine Ladung zu bergen.<\/p>\n<p>Zu den Ladungen geh\u00f6rte alles von Gold, Silber, Porzellan, Tee, Bauholz, Baumwolle, Spitzen, Seide, Rum und erlesenen Weinen bis hin zu eleganten M\u00f6beln. Im Jahr 1830 war Key West die pro Kopf reichste Stadt der gesamten Vereinigten Staaten und blieb dies etwa 50 Jahre lang. Allein im Jahr 1856 teilten die 2.000 Einwohner fast $400.000 Beute auf. Das w\u00fcrde in heutigen Dollar $7.000.000 entsprechen.<\/p>\n<p>Im Jahr 1869 str\u00f6mten Fl\u00fcchtlinge aus einem kubanischen B\u00fcrgerkrieg nach Key West. Einmal brutto $750.000 pro Jahr. Schw\u00e4mme aus Key West wurden nach New York verschifft und wurden als bekannt<br \/>\ndenen aus dem Mittelmeerraum \u00fcberlegen. Sieben Jahre sp\u00e4ter, im Jahr 1912, fuhr der erste Zug \u00fcber die gesamte L\u00e4nge von \u201eFlagler&#039;s Folly\u201c und bewies den Skeptikern, dass er gebaut werden konnte.
